Using Sun Java Plug-in with Proliance Scheduling

By Mark Lewis , Meridian Support Services Technical Analyst

Meridian uses the Sun Microsystems Java™ Runtime Plug-in with Proliance Scheduling. The Java Plug-in allows applets like the Scheduling CPM and Collaborative Gantts to run in Microsoft® Internet Explorer. When a Gantt opens it runs under the Sun Java Applet instead of Java Runtime Environment that comes with the web browser.

When you open the CPM Gantt or the Collaborative Gantt, the application automatically installs Java Plug-in on your computer. This installation takes a few minutes and requires that an administrator or someone with install rights completes the process.

Typical Installation Instructions
Java Plug-in 1.4.2.07 (current version) warns you that it is being installed on your machine. You then must complete the user license agreement. Unless you need to change the default language for Java Plug-in, select the typical installation. Once installation finishes, the Gantt will show, “Loading in Progress…Please Wait.” Please allow a few minutes if you are opening a larger-size schedule. When a security certificate warning from Proliance Scheduling appears, click “Yes” to complete the installation.

Installation Through Control Panel
(needed for proxy server or multiple installs of Java Plug-in)

After Java Plug-in has been installed, it loads without additional configurations. If you have multiple installs of Java Plug-in or are using a proxy server in your environment, you may need to configure Java through the Control Panel.

Open the Control Panel, and double click on the Java icon. You will need to check each tab to make sure it is set to meet your network environment. Below are the recommended settings or descriptions for the tabs.

Basic: For normal use “Hide Console” should be selected. When troubleshooting, select “Show Console” and “Show Exception Dialog Box” for Java information.

Advanced: SelectUse Java Plug-In Default.” You can pick earlier versions of Java from the dropdown list if available. The Gantt may or may not work if you select earlier versions.

Browser: Select “Microsoft Internet Explorer.”

Proxies: Select “Use Browser Settings.” If you use different settings for your proxy configuration than what is in Internet Explorer for the Java Plug-in, you should manually enter Proxies tab information.

Cache: Select “Enable Caching.” This tab allows you to view and clear the cached files.

Certificates: List the certificates that Java Plug-in will use.

Update: When you need to obtain the latest version, select “Get Java Update” on this tab.

About: Displays the version and contains a link to Java Help.

Troubleshooting
If you encounter difficulty, check the following settings and conditions:

  1. Verify you are using the latest version of Java Plug-in.
  2. Ensure Internet Explorer Options/Advanced tab has the Sun Java Plug-in selected.
  3. Clear the Java Cache.
  4. Remove Java Plug-in from the Add/Removal Programs Control Panel. Then re-open the Gantt, and Java will be reinstalled.
  5. Uncheck the MS Java Plug-in on the Brower Tab (not recommended unless absolutely necessary for resolution).
